What do I need to start learning to drive?

1. Your Provisional Driving Licence.
This can be applied for by using form D1 from any main Post Office. Or you can apply online HERE.

Once you have received your Provisional Licence, check the details are all correct, if they are sign the Paper counterpart.
Keep BOTH parts safe, you will need both parts to take the Theory and Practical driving test.

2. Study Aids
The Driving Standards Agency recommend 2 books to help you prepare for your Theory test and assist you with your Practical training.

The Highway Code

Driving: The Essential Skills

These can be purchased from most good bookshops.
There is also some software and DVD's to help with your theory test and hazard perception test.

3. Find a driving instructor
These can be found in Yellow Pages, In your local Paper, by recommendation or on the internet. There are a few things to think about when choosing a driving instructor. I have written a page explaining this HERE.

4. Your Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test.
You can begin your practical lessons whilst studying for your Theory test. When you believe you are ready you take your Theory test you can book it on line HERE. Or by telephoning 0870 0101 372.
If you have a driving instructor when you are ready to take your Theory Test, he/she will help you apply.

5. Booking your Practical Driving Test
Your instructor will let your know when he/she believes you are ready. some instructors will book your test on your behalf. If you are booking your test yourself your instructor will give you instructions.

6. After you Pass
When you pass your Practical test it is all over. All you need to do now is send in your Test Pass Certificate. There is a time limit for doing this of 2 Years, so don't dawdle.

7. Pass Plus
Pass Plus is a scheme that give you extra tuition after you have passed your practical test. This covers items that could not be tested on your standard test :- Motorway driving, Night driving, bad weather conditions etc. This is voluntary and does not include any tests. You need to find a driving instructor that takes Pass Plus (most do) and you will under go 12 hours of training (usually 6 x 2hour sessions) but most instructors are flexible. As well as the benefits of the course you will also get a certificate of completion which entitles you to some good discounts with Insurance companies. (sometimes equivalent to 1 years no claims discount, or 30%)

8. Drive safely
Always.
